Now in its third year, the 3.5-day expedition race Cameco Cowboy Tough brings adventure racers of all ages from all over the world to Wyoming, offering them an unrivaled in-depth tour of the rugged, beautiful and historic state. This year’s upcoming event has a 14-year-old boy from Florida hoping to set an adventure racing record.
Hunter Leininger is currently “America’s youngest adventure racer” and a world record holder for being the youngest person to complete a 3-day adventure race. By competing in the July 16-19 Cameco Cowboy Tough, starting in Buffalo, WY and ending in Casper, WY, Hunter’s hoping to increase that record race length to 3.5 days.
“Hunter completed his first adventure race at 7 years old,” stated Jeff Leininger, Hunter’s father and teammate on team Florida Xtreme. “He has already completed a 3-day race across Florida at just 12 years old.”
“We are very excited to have Hunter joining our elite field of racers,” said Rev3 Adventure’s Mark Harris, race director for Cameco Cowboy Tough. “At his age, he already has an exceptional race résumé.” Hunter has competed in more than 20 adventure races over the past 7 years. Now he doesn’t just race to say he completed it; he races to win.
Just prior to Cowboy Tough, Hunter competed in the Leadville Silver Rush 50-mile Bike Challenge on Saturday, July 11, 2015. He and his dad will make their way to Wyoming on July 14, ready to race on July 16.
More than 20 all-male and co-ed teams of two or four will be competing in the Thursday through Sunday event. The winning team at the 2015 Cameco Cowboy Tough race will take home $5,000, paid entry for the AR World Championship race and thousands of dollars in prizes, making it the largest prize purse in North America for an adventure race.
The Cameco Cowboy Tough Adventure Race is a premier qualifying event for the Adventure Racing (AR) World Series. The AR World Series unites some of the best endurance athletes in the world at these qualifying events around the globe. The top two teams at each of these events will gain entry to the AR World Championship that will be held in Brazil in November.
